Archaeology, archaeometry, landscape archaeology
The area of Archaeology, archaeometry, landscape archaeology deals with research and teaching activities in the field of Archaeology, with a focus on wide range periods of time: from Prehistory to Post-Medieval ages. The cited area studies different research aspects from the analysis and the reconstruction of rural and urban landscapes and architectures to the material culture studies. The main research topics are: Methodology of Archaeology, Pre and Protohistory, Classical and Medieval Archaeology, Ancient Topography, Archaeology of Production and Trade, Architecture and Urbanisation, Archaeology of Food. Such studies are carried out through different theoretical approaches and methodologies, also by using new technologies and are applied both to studies in site (archaeological excavations and surveys) to laboratory in depth analyses.

The visual, musical and performing arts group includes studies on theoretical, historical, historiographical, philological, critical, methodological, technical and production aspects of theatre and performances, instruments, notations, languages, musical media; audiovisual media such as cinema, television, photography and new visual technologies.


Medieval and Modern Philology and Literature

The area of Medieval and Modern Philology and Literature deals with research and teaching activities related to Italian Philology, History of Italian Language and Literature, Comparative Literature, Medieval Latin Literature, Language and Philology and Romance Philology. The analysis of Literary texts is framed within an European and Italian perspective, and covers a period going from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Era. The research focuses on historical, cultural, linguistic, rhetorical, stylistic, metrical, narratological aspects of literary texts, and on their philological study (textual philology and history of the manuscript tradition). Great importance is given to multidisciplinary and comparative approach, as well as to the use of innovative methods.


Geography
The Geography group includes different researches on cultural, social, economic, environmental, historical and touristic aspects of Geography and Cartography.


Graeco-Latin Language, Literature and Philology
The area of Graeco-Latin Language, Literature and Philology deals with research and teaching activities related to Greek and Latin literature and culture, from the beginning and, respectively, up to the Byzantine era and late antiquity. The main topics are: epic poetry and drama, rhetorical and philosophical prose, ancient and medieval commentaries, poetry's metre and structure, lexicography, interaction between literary genres. It investigates the textual transmission of the works, their reception and the historical debate about them, as related especially to drama and the evolution of the philological discipline. Such studies, based as they are on analysis of, and translation from, the texts in the original language, are carried out through several critical methodologies and theoretical approaches (anthropology, historical and cultural research, linguistics, palaeography, philology, pragmatics, stylistics).


Linguistics
The research group in Linguistics investigates: (i) facts and factors of linguistic change, by applying the methods of comparative syntax, historical morphology and phonology of the Indo-European languages, with a particular focus on Greek, Latin, Baltic languages, Hittitology and Anatolian languages in general. Aspects of linguistic change are also studied in terms of contact among the Indo-European languages. The writing systems of some Indo-European languages by exploring their graphematic relations. The study of the historical codification of linguistic concepts and categories is traced from classical antiquity to the present day. (ii) the relationship between the different modules of language, conceived as a cognitive system (with a specific focus on morphology and syntax), and the systems of interpretations of language (semantics and pragmatics). By combining theoretical and experimental methodologies, it also deals with issues of language acquisition, with an emphasis on communicatively impaired populations and on the interaction between communicative impairment and bilingualism, with applications in psycho- and neurolinguistics.


History of art
The history of art group includes different research fields: from Medieval Arts and Architecture to Modern and Contemporary Arts, together with History of Decorative Arts , History of Criticism and Artistic Sources, studies on methodologies, history of restoration and different artistic techniques, Museology and Museography.

The area "History and Anthropology" includes the historical research from the Middle Ages to the present day and anthropological studies, and the in-depth study of teaching methods concerning these disciplines. The privileged areas of research are: social, cultural and gender history; political history and the history of political and ecclesiastical institutions; the history of religious life; the history and anthropology of migrations; the history of cultural exchanges and of international relations; intellectual history and the history of science; the history of historiography; paleography and diplomatics; archival and librarianship; the history of publishing processes; the anthropology of museums and of tourism.

Our staff are committed to interdisciplinary approaches to the ancient past. This enables us to carry out reasearch that crosses whatever kind of boundaries and frontiers, covering a broad range of times, places, and peoples.
